1. Choose a voice, not a face
Read two or three profiles and notice which one you would actually want to talk to at eleven at night. Tone matters far more than looks.
2. Open with something real
One line about your day and one question is plenty. Detail gives a character something to hold on to.
3. Say how you want to be spoken to
Shorter replies, slower pace, fewer questions, more description: ask, and it holds for the rest of the conversation.
4. Set your limits early
Name any subject you would rather avoid. It will not be raised again.
5. Use the story mode
Describe a room, a season and a situation, and let the scene run across several sessions. Long form is where these conversations are at their best.
6. Come back to the thread
Continuity is the whole point. Returning to yesterday is what makes the company feel like company.
7. Keep private details private
Financial data, passwords and identifying documents have no place in a chat window, here or anywhere.
8. Stop whenever you like
Close the panel and the conversation simply waits.
